If you found your ancestor you had to go through all the pages one by one to find the rest of the family by the Durant Roll Number. Surfing through 90 pages is a monumental task that even I would give up on. So we have databased the Durant Roll. You can now search the files by name, county or band, or go through all the records one by one. Then simply click on a link to bring up the family of that person.

By a 35,000 vote margin male voters approved a State of Michigan Constitutional Amendment that they had previously rejected in 1875, 1912, and 1913. In 1875, women were granted the right to vote in "school elections" in their local townships. On August 26th, 1920 the 19th Amendment to the Constitution took effect nation wide. Added a citation from the source, Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War, 1861 - 1865 to each man found. This has allowed us to correct more of the records found in the book Loss of the Sultana...... Errors found in some records as to the name spelling (some so far off it makes you scratch your head!), regiment, company and rank were found. This has also allowed me to confirm a few more men that were on the boat, and disqualify some that were listed in the Official List but had died months before the Sultana blew up. I also managed to find a few men who were not on the Official List. More research will be done on these brave men and I will add more data in at each phase.

The Sultana exploded on the Mississippi River on 27 April 1865, north of Memphis, Tennessee. The majority of the passengers were military personnel. Rated to carry 376 passengers, and taking on over 2000 passengers, 250 hogheads of sugar and 60 mules and horses, after having a boiler repairs a day before is a disaster waiting to happen. To top this off the soldiers were from prison camps and were sickly and emancipated from their stay there. The ones that did not burn or die in the fire were more likely to die from drowning due to exhaustion and cold if they escaped the boat. This side wheeled ferry was commissioned to take Union soldiers home after the war, just days after President Lincoln was murdered. They were to take on the men who had been held in prison camps to Cairo, Illinois as a trade of prisoners of war. Why would the captain of the boat do this? Probably for money. But a more disturbing question is why the military officers who were in charge of arranging transport for these men would allow a boat to be overloaded with this country's heroes. We have extracted the men from Michigan that were on the Sultana for visitors to use.

32-35 Swedish immigrants started a church in the rough and tumble mining town of Marquette, Michigan's upper peninsula in May of 1881. They were surrounded by a new land which was bustling and growing as the area was rich in various ores being mined and Marquette became a port to load the large ships for their journey from Lake Superior to ports on the southern part of the Great Lakes to be processed for use.

The parishioner's perseverance in bringing their religion and building a place for themselves in the area is laid out in this book in detail and includes the members names who helped along with the minister' names and short biographies of the latter. Compared to other books of this type it does an excellent job of naming founding members, current members, and has a large collection of committee photographs that have the people named. A great addition to any family history.

The story of their trials in building their church and establishing their religion gives the reader an excellent view of the time period. It also covers the Great Flu Epidemic and how the quarantines were established and how it effected their Christmas celebrations and other church gatherings, including Sunday services.
